- The active ingredient omeprazole reduces stomach acidity, thus it is used for the treatment of indigestion and heartburn as well as in the treatment and prevention of ulcers. - Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced by your stomach. - Omeprazole is used to treat the following conditions: - In adults: - Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) where stomach acid escapes into the esophagus (the tube connecting your throat to your stomach), causing pain, inflammation, and heartburn. - Ulcers in the upper part of the intestine or the stomach. - Ulcers infected with a bacteria called "Helicobacter pylori." - Ulcers caused by medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). - Omeprazole can also be used to prevent ulcer formation if you are taking NSAIDs. - Increased stomach acidity due to pancreatic growth (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). - In children: Children over the age of 1 and weighing more than 10 kg. - Pediatric gastroesophageal reflux disease, which can include symptoms such as the return of stomach contents to the mouth, vomiting, and poor weight gain. - Children and teenagers over the age of 4 years.
